Babajimi Benson, a member of the house of representatives, has asked the federal government to file contempt proceedings against labour unions over the ongoing nationwide strike.

Benson, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Ikorodu federal constituency in Lagos, spoke on the floor of the green chamber while contributing to a motion.
Ben Kalu, the deputy speaker, had moved a motion praying the house to interface with the senate and dialogue with labour unions to immediately suspend the nationwide strike.
Debating the motion, Benson said the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) is illegal.
The lawmaker said there is a court judgement preventing labour unions from embarking on strike.
“Today, they have flouted this court judgement and I believe the executive should file contempt proceedings against them and bring anybody who has flouted the judgement of the court to account,” he said.
“I believe this is a route to go and I believe as a parliament we should be seen to be following due process.
“Inviting them to a dialogue, I believe is also contentious. I think we should encourage and urge the executive to enforce the court order and bring anybody who has breached the order to account.”
Workers commenced a nationwide strike on Tuesday to protest against the alleged brutality of Joe Ajaero, president of NLC, in Imo state.
The federal government had secured a court order restraining the labour unions from embarking on the strike.
But despite the court orders, the labour unions directed their members to proceed with the strike, halting operations in most public facilities
