The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The Minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora on the occasion and urged Nigerians to use the celebration to reflect on the virtues associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

Tunji-Ojo identified compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service to humanity as values Nigerians should embrace, particularly at a time when the country requires greater national unity and understanding.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the Minister said.

He said the values exemplified by the Prophet remained relevant not only to Muslims but to Nigerians of every religious background.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he added.

Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, stability and greater national cohesion.

According to him, sustaining peace and unity is a collective responsibility requiring citizens to demonstrate tolerance and mutual respect regardless of religious, ethnic or political differences.

The Minister urged Muslims and other Nigerians observing the holiday to celebrate peacefully and responsibly.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security throughout the country.

Eid ul Mawlid, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, is observed by Muslims in commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is traditionally marked in Nigeria with prayers, religious lectures and charitable activities.

With the Federal Government’s declaration, federal government offices, schools, banks and other institutions that observe national public holidays are expected to close on Tuesday, August 25.

Normal official and commercial activities are expected to resume after the holiday, subject to individual institutional arrangements.

The Federal Government wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
