Federal civil servants in Nigeria are bracing for a low-key Christmas celebration this year as their December 2024 salaries have been delayed.

This comes on the heels of similar delays in November salaries, which were only paid out during the second week of December for most federal workers.

Sources within the civil service attribute the delays to issues stemming from the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, as well as a transition to a new payment platform. Civil servants who spoke to our correspondents expressed their frustration and the financial strain the delays have caused, particularly during the holiday season when expenses are higher.

The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, Mr Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that salary payments commenced on Monday and measures have been taken to address the discrepancies. He explained that the implementation of the new minimum wage, which was increased from N30,000 to N70,000 in July 2024, had affected salary allocations for some ministries, leading to shortfalls.

The Federal Government has allocated substantial funds in the 2024 and 2025 budgets to address minimum wage-related adjustments. However, the National Assembly reduced the allocation for this purpose by 45% in the approved 2024 budget, from the initially proposed N1tn to N550bn.

As the nation looks ahead to the 2025 budget, the Federal Government plans to spend a total of N8.52tn on personnel and pension costs for federal workers, a significant increase from the 2024 provision. However, the government is set to spend even more on debt servicing, which will consume 53.98% of the total N46.02tn 2025 budget alongside personnel and pension costs.

The delayed salaries have left many federal civil servants struggling to provide for their families during this festive period, casting a shadow over their Christmas celebrations.
