A family of three lost their lives in a tragic car accident along the Mabushi Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday, following an altercation with suspected louts.

Eyewitnesses said the louts stopped the family’s private vehicle, accusing the driver of flouting their rules by picking up a relative without paying an extortion “fine.” When the driver refused, the louts allegedly forced their way into the car, dragging the steering wheel and causing the vehicle to crash.

The collision, which involved a painted taxi, forced the vehicle off the road and into a ditch. The family reportedly died instantly.

Enraged passersby who witnessed the scene chased down the louts, setting one of them on fire while two others sustained severe injuries. Police officers later intervened, rescuing the injured suspects and rushing them to the hospital.

A separate account, however, suggested that five persons were inside the vehicle — two family members and three louts  at the time of the crash. The survivors, according to witnesses, were taken to the National Hospital for treatment.

Police officers from Mabushi Division later cleared the wreckage.

The Mabushi corridor, which links Abuja’s Central Business District with Jabi and Wuse, is notorious for heavy traffic, extortion by touts, and harassment of motorists. Authorities have in the past announced clampdowns on illegal lout activities, but enforcement has remained inconsistent.
