The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed off multiple properties belonging to Paradise Estate in Life Camp Extension, Abuja, over alleged violations of consumer rights.

The enforcement action followed a series of complaints from subscribers who accused the estate’s management of failing to deliver housing units despite receiving full payment, in some cases for over three years.

Speaking after the operation, the FCCPC’s Deputy Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Mr. Marvin Nadah, said the Commission had earlier issued compliance notices directing the company to hand over the properties to buyers but was met with persistent non-compliance.

“Payment has been completed by these customers for over three years, yet they have not received the properties they paid for. Not just one consumer,” Nadah stated.

He explained that the Commission had followed due process by receiving complaints, conducting a redress procedure, and making a determination before issuing directives in line with Section 150 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

According to him, the failure of the estate’s operators to comply with the regulatory directives necessitated the sealing of the properties.

“We are convinced that the action the Commission is taking is lawful. The government cannot sit by and watch when consumers are exploited or misled to the point where their interests are injured,” he added.

Nadah further disclosed that the Commission has been inundated with complaints within the real estate sector, noting that investigations are ongoing, both generally across the sector and specifically regarding Paradise Estate.

The FCCPC reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers and warned that it would not hesitate to take similar enforcement actions against developers who fail to honour contractual obligations.

It also advised prospective buyers to exercise due diligence by verifying claims made by developers before entering into transactions, stressing that consumer awareness remains key to preventing exploitation.

The Commission maintained that enforcement efforts would be intensified to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws and safeguard the rights of Nigerians in the housing sector.
