The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has approved a downward review of electricity tariff for Band A customers of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, reducing the rate from ₦209 to ₦160 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), with effect from August 1, 2025.

This was disclosed in the Commission’s directive, Order No. EERC/2025/003, titled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025”, issued over the weekend.

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited is the successor to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and was recently licensed to handle power distribution across Enugu State.

According to the EERC, the revised tariff is “cost-reflective” and takes into account the ongoing subsidy by the Federal Government on electricity generation. The Commission noted that this ensures consumers benefit from government financial support while allowing MainPower to operate sustainably.

Speaking on the development, EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, said the Commission conducted a thorough review of MainPower’s tariff and licensing applications using its Tariff Methodology Regulations 2024 and the accompanying Distribution Tariff Model.

“We reviewed their entire costs and determined an average price of ₦94 per kWh. This reflects the subsidized cost of power generation the Federal Government pays ₦45 out of the actual ₦112 generation cost,” Okonkwo explained.

He noted that while the cost-reflective tariff averages at ₦94, Band A customers will pay ₦160/kWh to help manage tariff shock, while Bands B through E will remain under a tariff freeze.

“If and when the subsidy is removed, the current Band A rate of ₦160 may become unsustainable. But for now, it allows MainPower to stabilize operations without requiring additional state-level subsidies,” he added.

The EERC also introduced stringent oversight mechanisms to ensure MainPower adheres to its service commitments.

The directive mandates that:

  • MainPower must publish a rolling seven-day average of daily power supply for each Band A feeder by 9 a.m. daily.
  • If service levels fall below the Band A commitment for two consecutive days, the company must notify the Commission within 24 hours.
  • Persistent failure over seven days will result in automatic downgrading of the affected feeder.

Okonkwo emphasized that these measures aim to prevent customers from paying premium rates for substandard service.

“This is a win for all stakeholders in the state’s electricity market, and we remain committed to ensuring improved access and service delivery,” he said.
