An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the 2024 Edo state governorship election, Dr. Blessing Agbomhere, has warned the party against imposing a candidate with an alleged criminal record, stating it would spell doom for the APC.

In a statement on Sunday, Agbomhere alleged a plot by some party leaders to prune down the number of aspirants from 30 to one – Dennis Idahosa, who was indicted for fraud in 2015 by a panel set up by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Quoting details from earlier reports, Agbomhere outlined findings against Idahosa which led to his sack as Commissioner under Oshiomhole. He subsequently defected to the PDP amidst the probe.

While expressing his respect for Oshiomhole, Agbomhere vowed not to stay silent over attempts to choose the next Governor despite the high stakes. He said Edo people are too sophisticated to accept such impositions.

Lauding the APC National Working Committee for condemning the move and reopening contestation, Agbomhere stated that going ahead with Idahosa’s candidacy would spark a crisis and lead to the party’s defeat. He urged considerations of other qualified aspirants to avoid divisions.

With the APC seeking to reclaim the state after Governor Godwin Obaseki’s defection and re-election on the PDP’s platform, Agbomhere and other contenders hope fair primaries will boost the party’s odds to produce the next governor of Edo State.
