The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has announced that it will be sending out test email and SMS messages to eligible voters ahead of the upcoming NBA Elections 2024. The elections, slated for Saturday, July 20, 2024, will determine the National Officers of the Association and NBA representatives to the General Council of the Bar.

In a notice issued by the ECNBA, signed by Oluseun Abimbola SAN (Chairman) and Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim (Secretary) of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), dated June 26, 2024, the committee emphasized that participation in the election is contingent upon members being eligible to vote and having their names on the Final Voters Register. To be included in the register, members must have paid their Bar Practicing Fees between January 1 and March 31, 2024. Payments made outside this period will disqualify members from voting or being voted for.

As a crucial step in the election process, the ECNBA will send out test email and SMS messages on June 28, 2024, to the contact information provided by eligible voters on the Voters Register. This measure aims to ensure that voters can successfully receive their online voting credentials. The committee stressed that voting credentials will only be sent to the email addresses and phone numbers attached to profiles verified on the Voter database.

To ensure the smooth delivery of SMS messages, the ECNBA urges members to disable their Do-Not-Disturb (DND) settings for their registered phone numbers. In case the test email does not appear in the inbox, members are advised to check their Promotions, Social, Spam, or Junk folders.

During the verification exercise, the ECNBA received a total of 9,123 entries submitted via the provided Google form for the correction of details on the voters’ list. After thorough filtration and validation, only 1,181 entries were found to have requested changes to email addresses and/or phone numbers. These requests have been subjected to further verification by the ECNBA, with only certified changes being amended in the database.

The ECNBA reported to the NBA National Executive Committee (NEC) on June 20, 2024, that out of the 1,181 entries, 737 persons requested to change their GSM phone numbers, 352 persons requested to change their email addresses, and 92 persons requested to change both their GSM phone numbers and email addresses from the details previously provided on the NBA portal.

Members are encouraged to check both their email and SMS to ensure they receive the test messages on either or both platforms, particularly if their requested changes have not been effected due to validation and certification issues.
