The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the country’s history, with more than 2,300 deaths recorded since the outbreak was declared in May.

Health authorities have reported 4,945 confirmed cases, including 101 new infections recorded within a single 24-hour period, as efforts intensify to contain the spread of the disease.

The virus has now reached six of the country’s 26 provinces, raising concerns among public health officials over the speed and scale of transmission.

The current outbreak is being linked to the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, a relatively rare strain that has been associated with only two previously known outbreaks.

Unlike the Zaire species responsible for several major Ebola epidemics, there is currently no approved vaccine specifically available for the Bundibugyo strain.

Public health authorities have described the present outbreak as exceptionally fast-moving, with the United Nations humanitarian chief warning that, at its peak, the epidemic was killing approximately one person every 30 minutes.

Although the outbreak has remained largely within the Democratic Republic of Congo, cases have also been reported in neighbouring Uganda, while a small number have been detected in Europe.

The World Health Organization is working with national authorities and other partners to contain transmission, with a target of bringing the outbreak under control within three months.

Health officials have, however, cautioned that controlling transmission does not necessarily mean the outbreak will end immediately, as surveillance and response measures would have to continue until authorities are satisfied that chains of infection have been broken.

Scientists are meanwhile working on vaccines specifically targeting Bundibugyo Ebola.

Britain’s medicines regulator has approved human trials of a vaccine developed by researchers at the University of Oxford using technology similar to that employed in the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Ebola is a rare but highly dangerous viral disease that can cause fever, headache and fatigue, followed in severe cases by vomiting and diarrhoea.

The virus is transmitted primarily through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person.

The latest outbreak is the 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the virus was first identified in the country about 50 years ago.

Efforts to contain previous outbreaks have repeatedly been complicated by years of conflict, population displacement and pressure on the country’s health infrastructure.

With infections continuing to rise, health authorities are strengthening surveillance, treatment, contact tracing and infection-control measures in affected areas while attempting to prevent further spread within the country and across its borders.
