A 28-year-old woman, Mrs Charity Anani, who delivered quadruplets at a private hospital identified as Adebayo Hospital in Igando, Lagos State, has died alongside one of her newborns.

According to the PUNCH, the father of the newborns, Mr Paul, confirmed to our correspondent, saying the incident happened on Friday, April 3, 2026, after Charity suddenly developed a breathing complication on Thursday evening.

The late Charity had earlier, in an interview, told Sunday PUNCH that she was delivered of the four babies on Friday, February 27, 2026, after which they were detained over their failure to balance up their medical bill of N3m.

It was learned that she also had a daughter before the birth of the quadruplet, adding that the family initially expected twins as suggested by different ultrasound scans, but it was a surprise when she was eventually delivered of four babies.

While a caesarean section had been carried out on Charity to deliver two out of the babies, one of the newborns developed complications and was placed on oxygen in an incubator.

The situation, however, forced the late Charity and Paul to seek public support to offset their hospital bill.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH on the development, the bereaved husband said the incident had thrown the family into mourning, noting that after Charity’s health condition worsened, she was placed on oxygen and medication.

He disclosed that although the total hospital bill was about N3m, a part payment had been made, leaving an outstanding balance of N1.4m yet to be settled.

Paul said, “It happened on Friday, April 3, 2026. She was complaining that she was not breathing.

Her breathing was not fine, so I needed to call the doctor to check on her. After the doctor examined her, she was given oxygen and medication.

“The breathing complications started on Thursday between 5 pm and 6 pm till around 9 am on Friday, when she eventually passed. We are still in the hospital, Adebayo Hospital at Governor’s Road in Igando, Lagos State, where the incident happened.”

Paul added that before Charity’s death, one of the quadruplets earlier placed in an incubator had also died.

“One of the four babies also died, and that was the one in the incubator. At the time the baby died, my wife was still alive, but she was asking about the baby, but because of her condition, I decided not to tell her the truth about what happened.

“I had to keep it to myself, thinking that when we got home, I’d know how to tell her. I didn’t know that this was what would happen at the end of the day. We have been discharged from the hospital,” he stated.

Paul stressed that although the hospital bill had not been fully settled, the family was eventually discharged due to the circumstances, noting the remaining three surviving babies were in stable condition and currently being cared for by family members.

He added, “Actually, I’m not in the hospital again. Although I’ve not been able to balance the hospital bill, as the situation is, they had to discharge us. My family had to take me away from the hospital and put me somewhere because, as I speak, I’m not with my family at the moment.

“I’m currently not getting myself. But the hospital bill had not been claimed even before the incident happened. The three other babies are fine by the grace of God, and they are being taken care of by my family.”
