Major General Ijioma Nwokoro Ijioma (retd.) has cautioned the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, against falling for any tricks aimed at luring him back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under any guise.

The retired General gave the advice Thursday night while featuring in the July edition of the Ikengaonline town hall meeting. He asserted that Obi’s political interests would not be guaranteed in the PDP as currently constituted. He warned Obi not to trust a PDP that idolizes the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, whose loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not in doubt.

Speaking on the topic “Ndigbo and the 2027 Politics”, Gen. Ijioma described the veiled overtures for Obi to return to the PDP as suspicious, calling it a booby trap aimed at boxing him in and ultimately sabotaging his presidential ambition. He also cautioned Obi to be wary of his alliance with the coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), advising him to exit if he is not assured of securing its presidential ticket.

Gen. Ijioma maintained that Obi is arguably the only presidential aspirant in Nigeria today with the highest national appeal, insisting that he will win the presidential poll irrespective of his platform. He noted that Nigerians, already frustrated by hunger and hardship under the APC-led administration, are willing to follow Obi to any political party of his choice.

He said:
“If I were Peter Obi’s adviser, I would never advise him to return to the PDP. From what is happening, the PDP is a carcass, and I believe only vultures feast on carcasses. Returning to the PDP with Wike still entrenched there is risky there’s no guarantee that Obi’s interest would not be undermined.

“Another important point is this—and Peter Obi should take it seriously: he must be very cautious about the coalition. If he is not certain of getting the presidential ticket from the coalition with ADC, he should leave and join any other party where he can secure the nomination. The Nigerian masses who know Obi’s value will rally behind him, regardless of the party. He will win in 2027.

“Any party Peter Obi joins today will become a rallying point for Nigerians who are at the receiving end of the bad governance of the APC over the last 10 years. Nigerians have come to accept Peter Obi as a politician of integrity who is genuinely committed to addressing national issues. It is the masses—not the political elite—who believe Obi has the qualifications to lead Nigeria in 2027. I say this because the current APC government, which began in 2015, has plunged Nigeria into crisis.

“Nigerians who are suffering due to the abysmal performance of the APC are yearning for Peter Obi. Let me remind us of what former President Olusegun Obasanjo said—he advised Nigerians to give the Igbos a chance. Nigeria has had Presidents from the Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and even minority ethnic groups, but never a truly Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.

“I urge Nigerians to rally behind Peter Obi, because he has what it takes to pull Nigeria out of the woods. It is only the political elite, including some Igbo elites, who oppose Obi for selfish reasons. I call on Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora to continue to support Peter Obi, because I do not see any better candidate from any part of Nigeria.”
