The member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, on Tuesday disclosed that the House is working to assign specific roles to traditional rulers in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution.

Traditional rulers currently have no defined role in Nigeria’s constitution.

Speaking at the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration in Daura, Katsina State, Doguwa said the request is already before the Constitutional Reform Committee.

“Considering the crucial role of traditional rulers in the country, as members of the House of Representatives, we are already considering that provision. Traditional rulers, even before colonial rulers, have been very crucial in ensuring peace, security, and local administration. So, we need to provide them with their rightful position in the constitution,” he stated.

Doguwa, who also holds the title of Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, commended the organisers of the event, noting that it will further strengthen unity among Hausa speakers across the world.

The 2025 International Hausa Day celebration, hosted at the Emir of Daura’s palace in Katsina, marks the 10th edition of the annual cultural event. First initiated on social media in 2015, it has since evolved into a global commemoration every August 26, though it is yet to receive official recognition from the United Nations.

Daura, hometown of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, was strategically chosen as the venue due to its historic status as the cradle of Hausa civilisation and the birthplace of modern Hausa states.
