The University of Maiduguri Alumni Association reached a historic turning point on Saturday, February 14, 2026, with the inauguration of its first democratically elected Executive Committee since the Association’s inception, a development widely described as a defining moment in the evolution of its governance and institutional identity.

In congratulatory remarks delivered by Dr. Rukayyatu Gurin, a member of the Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, celebrated the milestone as a symbol of democratic progress, institutional maturity, and renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive leadership within the alumni community.

The newly inaugurated leadership is headed by President Baba Shettima Kukawa, alongside Vice President Maimuna Abdullahi Wakawa and Secretary Jamilu Musa Ja’afaru, PhD.

Other members of the Executive Committee include:

  • Assistant Secretary: Jerry Oliver
  • Financial Secretary: Usman Abdullahi Usman
  • Treasurer: Salamatu Ahiru Oniyangi
  • Publicity Secretary: Musa Ibrahim Musa
  • Assistant Publicity Secretary: Osikigwu Iyiwose
  • Auditor: Abubakar Ahmed
  • Director of Socials: Aminu Mohammed Shata
  • Legal Adviser: Muazu Mohammed Dikwa
  • Deputy Legal Adviser: Nwangburuka Chigozie

According to the Board of Trustees, the emergence of an elected leadership marks the closing of a transitional phase and the beginning of a new era grounded in participation, continuity, and strong institutional frameworks.

The Board emphasised that as pioneer leaders, the Executive Committee carries the responsibility of setting governance standards that will shape the Association’s future for generations.

Special tribute was paid to the outgoing Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Bulama, whose members included Umar Bindir, Mike Omeri, Sonia Chikelu Phil-Agbasi, and Secretary Sarah Jeta Atumga.

The Board commended their stewardship for stabilising the Association and laying the groundwork for credible elections.

Acknowledgement was also extended to the Constitutional Review and Electoral Committees chaired by Maxwell Gidado, SAN, whose efforts ensured a transparent electoral process, as well as the Dispute Resolution/Mediation Committee led by Mohammed Musa Saleh for fostering unity among previously divided factions.

The Board further recognised the contributions of the alma mater, University of Maiduguri, highlighting the role of Vice Chancellor Mohammed Laminu Mele and Director of Partnerships, Linkages and Alumni Affairs Shehu Mustapha Liberty in strengthening collaboration between the University and its graduates.

Reflecting on alumni engagement models, the Chairman referenced the anniversary celebrations of University of Lagos Alumni Association as an example of strong institutional partnership between universities and their alumni bodies.

Looking ahead, the Board reiterated its intention to support continuity while gradually transitioning to a renewed Board structure, emphasising mentorship, institutional memory, and generational inclusion.

Observers say the inauguration signals a fresh chapter for the Association — one defined by democratic governance, strengthened alumni participation, and a renewed commitment to advancing the legacy of the University of Maiduguri.
