Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has called on legal professionals to rise in defence of the rule of law amid what he described as the growing erosion of democratic values in Nigeria.

In a goodwill message to the NBA Ungogo Branch on the occasion of its 2025 Annual Law Week themed “The Rule of Law in a Democratic Society,” Akangbe decried the blatant disregard for court orders, abuse of prosecutorial powers, and rising impunity among public officials.

“The rule of law remains the bedrock of any functional democracy, and it is our collective duty, as lawyers, to defend it with courage and clarity,” he stated.

He expressed hope that the Law Week would inspire “honest introspection, bold discourse, and a renewed commitment to justice, accountability, and constitutionalism.”

Akangbe also commended the leadership and members of the Ungogo Branch for sustaining what he described as a vital tradition of intellectual engagement in service of the nation.

The event, which draws legal practitioners, scholars, and public interest advocates, is expected to address the critical role of legal institutions in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
