Concerns have been raised over the reported compromise of the official X account of Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, with calls for military authorities to act swiftly to secure the platform and restore full control.

The affected account, @DHQNigeria, is identified as the official X handle of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and has hundreds of thousands of followers, making it one of the military’s major channels for communicating operations, security updates and official statements to the public.

A public alert on Saturday said the account had been hacked and remained compromised for several hours, prompting concerns over the security implications of unauthorised access to an official military communication platform.

“@DHQNigeria has been hacked for hours now. The Defence Intelligence Agency needs to act swiftly to secure the account and restore control,” the alert stated.

The reported breach is particularly sensitive because the account is routinely used by Defence Headquarters to disseminate information concerning military operations, the activities of the Chief of Defence Staff and other official Armed Forces communications. Recent indexed posts from the account include Defence Headquarters press releases and operational information.

The development has consequently triggered calls for the relevant defence, intelligence and cybersecurity authorities to immediately establish the extent of any compromise, recover the account and determine whether unauthorised persons gained access to sensitive administrative information connected with the platform.

There are also concerns that continued unauthorised control of an official military account could create an avenue for misinformation, fraudulent messages or false security announcements capable of misleading members of the public.

Defence Headquarters has itself previously warned about the national-security dangers posed by manipulated and unauthorised military-related content circulated online, urging members of the public to rely on its official communication channels for verification.

As of the time of filing this report, however, no statement located on the official Defence Headquarters website had confirmed the reported hack or explained the circumstances surrounding the alleged compromise. The DHQ website remained accessible and continued to identify the institution’s official communication structure and recent military statements.

It was also not immediately clear who was behind the reported compromise, how access to the account may have been obtained, or whether any other Defence Headquarters digital infrastructure was affected.

The incident, if officially confirmed, would raise fresh questions about the cybersecurity safeguards protecting government and national-security communication platforms, particularly accounts capable of reaching large numbers of Nigerians in real time.

Attention is now on Defence Headquarters and the relevant military cybersecurity authorities for clarification on the status of the account, whether control has been restored and whether an investigation has commenced into the reported breach.
