The rumoured return of Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom to his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is already receiving sidekicks from the state chapter of the party. Ortom, a former National Auditor, left PDP in 2014 to All Progressives Congress (APC) where contested for the governorship and won. ‎He has also fallen out with the APC, leading to the rumour that the governor is now headed for PDP. ‎But Forum of PDP Governorship Aspirants in Benue State advised the party national leadership to be sensitive about the character and value persons coming to PDP‎. The aspirants who addressed a press conference in Abuja yesterday‎ said though they were not against new members joining the party, they were against the defection of people they described have negative values and mileage to the party. One of the aspirants, John Tondu, said Governor Ortom has no electoral value. ‎”The governor of Benue State today is a liability, not an asset. Because of the love we have for the people of Benue State, anything that will cripple our plan to take over the state should not be tolerated,” he warned. Former PDP governorship candidate in 2015, Dr. Terhemen Tarzoor‎ also said Governor Ortom’s credibility has reached an all-time low, leading to the ‘red card’ given to him by the APC. “We are sensitive to the value and character of the people joining the PDP. We won’t sit down and watch people of negative value join the party; someone who has not paid salaries for one year and four months. “When a person is chased out of a party, it speaks much about that person and what he represents,‎” Tarzoor added. The group had in a text read by Prof. David Ker cautioned the PDP national leadership to ensure internal democracy in the party. They also called for a level playing field, free, fair and transparent primary election. According to the forum, the party should be mindful that “it may be in the overall interest of the party to welcome into its fold new members, yet it even more in the interest of the party to ensure that internal democratic functionality and equilibrium is maintained as a critical prerequisite to keeping the party on the track of growth and success enjoyed up to this moment. “While we may not oppose any group or individuals from joining and participating in the affairs of the party in the state, we are strongly opposed to a purported unilateral decision to dissolve the executives of the party at all levels in the state to accommodate or give undue advantage to any group or person angling to join the party.”]]>
