A businesswoman, Mrs. Victoria Mba, has accused police officers in Cross River State of killing her 22-year-old son, Moses Onyekachi Mba, after he allegedly attempted to preach at the former residence of the state governor in Calabar.
Speaking with journalists, Mrs. Mba narrated that her son, who would have turned 23 in November, was shot on August 1 and later died from complications on August 9 after undergoing surgery at the Navy Hospital in Calabar.
According to her, Moses, an aspiring university student and passionate evangelist, had gone to the governorâs former residence to deliver what he described as a divine message. He was denied entry, allegedly beaten by policemen, and eventually shot.
âHe was left in a pool of blood for hours before Red Cross officials rushed him to the Navy Hospital,â she said, adding that the family was compelled to spend hundreds of thousands of naira on surgery and blood transfusions before he slipped into a coma and later died.
Mrs. Mba further alleged attempts by officials to cover up the incident, claiming that some security officers insisted on labeling her son as mentally unstable. âThey said my son was mad, but this was a boy who wrote JAMB and scored 196. He was preparing for admission into Nsukka. He was not mentally ill,â she stated.
She added that despite writing a petition to Zone 6 Police Command in Calabar, no officer had been held accountable three weeks after the shooting. âWe were advised to go public because the matter was being swept under the carpet,â she said.
The grieving mother stressed that she was not seeking compensation but justice. âI just want to know the people involved in his death and to be allowed to bury my son after an autopsy. I only ask that they tell me what he did and at least say sorry.â
She lamented that no official from the Cross River State government had reached out to her family since the incident. âNobody called or visited us. Not even the Commissioner for Information,â she said.
Moses, described by his mother as a âpeace-loving and generous boy with a passion for evangelism,â was the first of her four children.
The family insists on an autopsy before burial, while police authorities are yet to make a public statement on the matter.
