The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Ushie, for a period of three months following a petition filed by nine out of the ten councillors in the council.

The Assembly’s decision, which was reached after deliberations involving key stakeholders including Governor Bassey Otu and top state officials, comes amid serious allegations of corruption, abuse of power, misconduct, and the withholding of councillors’ salaries.

The councillors had previously moved to impeach Hon. Ushie three months ago but escalated the matter to the State Assembly, the Governor, his deputy, and the state APC party chairman after the impasse persisted.

Following a review of the petition and consultations with stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, the Assembly adopted a resolution to suspend the embattled LG boss in accordance with Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law 2025.

“After considering the allegations and discussions with all parties, the House resolved that a three-month suspension is necessary to allow for proper investigation and to maintain the integrity of local governance,” Speaker Ayambem stated.

In the interim, the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government, Hon. Egbung Odama, has been directed to take over as Acting Chairman.

The Assembly has also constituted an investigative committee to probe the allegations leveled against Hon. Ushie and submit its findings within the suspension period.
