*Abba Kyari Appointed As Chairman While Itua Onosetale To Serve As Vice

The Chapter Presidents of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) have, under the umbrella of Council of Presidents, dissolved the leadership of the national body of LAWSAN.

TheNigeriaLawyer gathered that there has been lingering crisis in the Association following the stripping of the Association’s Senate President, Emmanuel Williams, of his position by the Association’s judiciary as sanction for contempt. Williams in reaction moved the Senate of the Association for impeachment of the Executive President and Blessing Agbomhere was eventually impeached. The Senate directed the Executive Vice-President, Eluma Harriet, to take over as Executive President.

To bring lasting solution to the crisis which caused division in the Association, the chapter Presidents in a vote of 40 against 12 directed the parties – Williams, Agbomhere and Harriet to all resign from their positions. The Executive and the Senate of the Association were completely dissolved and a Caretaker Committee was immediately constituted to be headed the former Secretary of the Association, Abba Kyari Mohammed from University of Maiduguri, while the South South Zonal Director of the Association, Itua Onosetale Favour from University of Benin, will serve as his Vice-Chairman. Other Directors of the remaining five Zones – East, South West, North West, North East, North Central and North West are to serve as members of the Committee.

While admitting that there is a great task ahead, Abba Kyari, in his speech, pledged to reunite the Association and to ensure that the upcoming National Convention becomes one of the best

He said, “Let me, first of all, thank Almighty God for His intervention into the affairs of our dear association which was grappling to stand and at the brink of collapse.

“My special thanks also goes to all Lawsanites who stood firm in defending the unity and progress of this association even in the face of daunting challenges and also the council of chapter presidents, stakeholders and our erstwhile leaders, Dr Blessing, Harriet Eluma and Emmanuel Williams and the National Executive council members for their statesmanship and sacrifice in ensuring the unity and progress of the association. I must say this is a trying moment for this association and a lot need to be done to put the association in order and stability.

“I will also like to congratulate Onose who is the vice-chair of this committee and all other zonal directors who are also members of this caretaker committee.

“I believe we all understand the task ahead of us and I hope we are making all the efforts to justify the confidence reposed on us and put things in order, for posterity will judge us…

“Once again, I assure all lawsanites that the unity and growth of this association is non-negotiable and we will do everything at our level to ensure the association thrives and the upcoming annual National Convention is one of the best, leveraging on the existing planning committees already on ground.

“I also urge all lawsanites, stakeholders and chapter presidents to support us, advise us and call our attention where necessary while we make our decisions and take steps that will bring sanity and unity to the association.”

As at the time of making this news, Blessing Agbomhere and Eluma Harriet have both resigned in line with the resolution of the chapter presidents of the Association.
