The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called for urgent intervention by the Imo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to ensure the swift prosecution of suspects in the gruesome murder of Chinedu George Nwaowu, Esq., a lawyer killed on January 22, 2025, in Mgbidi, Oru West Local Government Area. Despite the arrest of four suspects—including Inspector Augustine Odidika, a serving police officer—no charges have been filed, prompting concerns of a potential cover-up.

In a letter dated April 3, 2025, addressed to the Imo State Attorney-General sighted by TheNigerialawyer, Osigwe expressed alarm over the delay in arraigning the suspects, even though investigations by the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Owerri, supervised by CSP Cosmas Anyanwu, Esq., have established a prima facie case of conspiracy and murder. “The police are yet to charge or arraign the suspects,” Osigwe wrote, noting that the lack of progress raises serious questions about the integrity of the justice process.

Osigwe highlighted reports suggesting that the suspects, detained at the State CID, may be receiving preferential treatment, fueling fears of interference due to influential connections. “We are concerned that extraneous factors may be influencing the handling of this case, potentially compromising the pursuit of justice,” he stated. The NBA President emphasized that “every individual, regardless of their status or connections, must answer to the law,” underscoring the association’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and due process.

The NBA is demanding immediate action to initiate legal proceedings, warning that further delays could erode public trust in the justice system. “Prompt action is imperative to ensure that justice is served without further delay and that any attempts to shield those responsible are decisively countered,” Osigwe urged in his letter. He called on the Attorney-General to instruct law enforcement agencies to arraign the suspects in accordance with the law, stressing that such intervention would safeguard the sanctity of Nigeria’s criminal justice system and protect victims’ rights.

The murder of Nwaowu, a member of the legal community, has sparked outrage among lawyers and residents alike, with the prolonged inaction intensifying public unease. The case, now over two months old, remains stalled despite concluded investigations, amplifying calls for accountability. Osigwe’s plea reflects growing frustration within the NBA over what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to obstruct justice in a high-profile case involving a police officer.
