*Writes New National Chairman to Halt Local Govt Elections
A factional state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Emeka Beke, has formally written to the party’s newly elected national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, seeking official recognition of his leadership by the national party.
In the letter submitted alongside a petition at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, Beke urged the national chairman to suspend the scheduled Rivers APC local government primary elections currently organised by the Tony Okocha-led executive committee. He requested that the primaries be placed under the supervision of his faction’s executive committee.
Beke insisted that he remains the authentic Rivers State APC chairman, referencing a High Court judgment delivered by Hon. Justice S. H. Aprioku of the Rivers State High Court, Port Harcourt Division. The judgment reportedly set aside the purported dissolution of Beke’s executive committee and affirmed that his leadership remains valid and subsisting until October 2025, when the tenure expires.
The letter stated, “The High Court… found that the State Executive Committee led by Chief Emeka Beke is the valid and subsisting leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State until October 2025 when its tenure will statutorily elapse.”
Beke further noted that this judgment has not been overturned by any appellate court, underscoring its binding status.
He also acknowledged the APC national leadership’s recent decision to extend the tenure of all elected State Executive Committees to December 2025, welcoming the move as timely and appropriate.
The letter drew attention to two court judgments: one affirming the subsistence of Beke’s committee, and another by Hon. Justice Obomanu that invalidated the purported election of the Tony Okocha-led APC Rivers State executive committee.
The petitioners described themselves as members of the Beke-led State Executive Committee and congratulated Prof. Yilwatda on his emergence as APC National Chairman.
“We believe that your emergence as National Chairman could not have come at a better moment than this,” the letter read.
They recalled the legal battle initiated following the attempted unlawful dissolution of the Rivers State APC leadership in 2023, citing Suit No. PHC/3592/CS/2023 filed by the State Secretary, Sam Etetegwung, challenging the dissolution’s validity.
Appealing to the national chairman, Beke’s faction requested: “Suspend the scheduled local government primaries of the APC, Rivers State, led by Chief Tony Okocha, and direct the Chief Emeka Beke-led Executive Committee to superintend the entire process, the Chief Emeka Beke-led Executive Committee being duly recognised by law.”
Concluding, the faction expressed readiness to collaborate with the national leadership to advance the party’s ideals, particularly within Rivers State.
