The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has adjourned the defamation case filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, and his son, popular musician Folarin Falana, also known as Falz, against social critic Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), to April 15, 2025.

The adjournment was granted at the request of Verydarkman’s legal team, following a letter from his representatives, the law firm of Deji Adeyanju & Co. The letter, dated February 18, 2025, and signed by counsel Nafiu Alagbe, cited the absence of the lead defence counsel, Marvin Omorogbe, due to a “domestic emergency” as the reason for the request.

While Verydarkman was absent in court, Femi Falana was present. Counsel for the Falanas, Omotayo Olatunbosun, expressed dissatisfaction with the request, describing it as a “time-wasting tactic” by the defendants. However, following the court’s directive, Olatunbosun proceeded to move his counter-affidavit challenging the preliminary objection filed by Verydarkman to the defamation suit.

Justice Matthias Dawodu subsequently adjourned the case to April 15, 2025, for a hearing.

The Falanas dragged Verydarkman to court over a controversial audio recording released by the social critic in 2024. In the recording, a person purporting to be controversial cross-dresser Bobrisky claimed to have spoken with Falz while in prison and alleged that he gave a Senior Advocate of Nigeria N10 million to secure a federal government pardon. Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in jail in April 2024 after being convicted for Naira abuse.

In the audio, the person claiming to be Bobrisky also alleged that his “godfather” helped him pay money to secure an apartment outside the prison facility where he served his jail term. The Falanas have denied the allegations, describing them as defamatory and damaging to their reputation.

Our correspondent also learned that after complying with the ex-parte application for a pre-emptive remedy granted by Justice Dawodu, the Falanas have filed a substantive suit on the matter. The new suit has been assigned to Justice Fimisola Azeez of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja.
