*Say Election Result Cancelled, ‘Regime’ Ended

Gabon’s military coup leaders have announced that they have confined President Ali Bongo to house arrest after asserting their control over the nation following contentious election results.
The coup leaders, representing Gabon’s security and defense forces, also revealed the detention of other members of Bongo’s government shortly after officials proclaimed his victory in a third-term bid.
Earlier, the coup plotters invalidated the election results and closed the nation’s borders, while dissolving state institutions. These developments were broadcasted on Gabon 24 TV station. The capital city, Libreville, experienced the sound of gunfire moments after the announcement.
For over 50 years, President Bongo’s family has maintained authority in the country, known for its oil and manganese production. The government of Gabon, an OPEC member, has not yet commented on the situation, and the president’s whereabouts remain uncertain since his last public appearance casting his vote on Saturday.
In response to the coup, numerous citizens celebrated in Libreville and Akanda, brandishing the Gabonese national flag and expressing joy through dancing and cheering.
The Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), composed of Gabonese army officers, elaborated on their takeover in a national address. The junta attributed the coup to a series of crises, encompassing institutional, political, economic, and social aspects, which they deemed necessary for the country’s progress.
In the translated address, the junta declared, “Today, 30 August 2023, we, the defense and security forces, gathered as the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) on behalf of the people of Gabon and as guarantors of the institutions’ protection — have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime.”
As a result of the coup, they nullified the outcomes of the general elections held on August 26, 2023, and disbanded various governmental bodies, including the Federal Government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre.
While the situation continues to unfold, the junta has called for calm, emphasizing their commitment to Gabon’s national and international obligations.
