The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, and the Nigerian Bar Association have lamented what they described as rising cases of rape and divorce in the state.

The chief judge and Chairman of the NBA, Abeokuta branch, Emmanuel Olu-Alade, raised the alarm during the 2019 Law Week held in Abeokuta, with the theme ‘Menace of Child Sexual Abuse in Nigeria : The Way Out.’

The event featured the annual Chief Toye Coker memorial lecture, end of the legal year luncheon and investiture of patrons.

The chief judge said, “The unfortunate aspect is that the issue of rape is so rampant now and the victims are children.

“This is quite disheartening and very disturbing. It is a reflection of society, it is not peculiar to Ogun State or Nigeria; it’s is a global menace.”

In his remarks, Olu-Alade recommended that rape should be one of the offences to attract capital punishment.

He said sexual abuse of children in Nigeria was at an alarming rate, stressing that female children could no longer comfortably walk around without being molested.

The NBA chairman expressed the need not to stigmatise victims of rape.

He added, “The stigma that follows the report of rape is annoying, even from parents. The stigma they pass across to their children and family members.

“It is the stigma that follows the report that has been stopping people from reporting rape cases.’’

While recommending punishment for rapists, Olu-Alade said, “I think rape should be one of the offences that will attract capital punishment because a life would have been destroyed.

“It should be a capital punishment because a life would have been destroyed.

“I think it should be a capital punishment notwithstanding what the society might have perceived about it. A life has been destroyed.”
