Dr. Uzoma Charles Dioha, Esq.

Distinguished Learned Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Benchers, Learned Senior Members of the Bar, Learned Colleagues, Ladies, and Gentlemen. I am Dr. Charles Dioha, Esq, the principal partner of Legal Practice Online and Associates (LPO). I am a senior member of the Nigerian Bar Association. I am currently a member of the Anaocha Branch of the NBA.

It is another election period, and we, as lawyers, are faced again with the opportunity to make choices as regards individuals who will pilot the affairs of our coveted Association.

As lawyers, we are part of the Nigerian society and as such, not immune from the very harsh socio-economic climate of the current period. For this singular reason, among others, we should avoid sentiments as we take the decision on the leadership of the Bar. At this point, even the blind can see that we all need to make a drastic shift from the status quo in all spheres of society, including the legal. And getting it right at the Bar is one step positive. The current living situation of lawyers, young lawyers especially, is quite deplorable, to say the least; it is high time a sharp U-turn is made. We need capable hands to take over the affairs of the Bar.

But not just that. We need gentlemen of purpose, gentlemen who will pioneer the affairs of learned colleagues by reflecting the true representations of the membership of the Bar and not those of an organ of the government or some minute, narrow interest. It is all about the national affairs at this point in time and no slipping on that! The affairs of the generality of lawyers should be the paramount goal as we approach this election. The plight of lawyers, particularly as it affects renumeration, is most unfortunate and has become an embarrassment.

I have served the Nigerian Bar Association as a young lawyer between 2016 – 2018 in the capacity of the Chairman, Young Lawyers Forum (YLF), ANAOCHA Branch and also had the opportunity of serving as a Council member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Young Lawyers Forum (NBA-YLF), where I represented Anambra State young lawyers at the National body.

I, Dr. Charles Dioha, Esq. have perused the final list of the candidates screened and cleared for the position of the Nigerian Bar Association president. The trio are all my brothers from Anambra in the persons of:

1. Mazi Afam Josiah Osuigwe, SAN.
2. Chukwuka Nwabueze Ikwuazom, SAN.
3. Joshua Chigbo Erojikwe.

I must state categorically that all of them are good candidates. But a lot of factors needs to be considered, as earlier hinted, with respect to taking the decision of who to support with our votes to be the next president of the Bar amongst them.

In my view, a tested view among colleagues, most especially colleagues from my branch, NBA ANAOCHA, I believe that the best man for the job at this critical moment in our country’s voyage is “MR. CHUKWUKA NWABUEZE IKWUAZOM, SAN.”

We all got to know this man during his era as the Chairman, NBA, Lagos branch, the biggest branch of the Bar in Nigeria with over 5,000 lawyers, as the man who led that size of lawyers without a single member stepping up afterwards to speak badly about him; the man of the people; the unassuming man, whose humility is unrivalled; a rare gem! The manner with which he presided over his meetings as the chairman could be described as nothing but top notch, very articulate and all-inclusive (as shared by colleague-members of the NBA, Lagos branch).

This is a man with a great passion for and commitment to the betterment of our noble profession. This is a man that when one hears him speak, one is inspired, motivated, and spurred by the sincerity of his words. This is a man who believes in mutual respect amongst lawyers as professional colleagues, regardless of status. This man is indeed a green light for lawyers all over.

Today, I throw in my “widow’s might” of support to the young lawyers in Anambra State, courtesy of the learned silk, who has inspired people like me and many others to believe that NBA is our collective jewel and everyone must be a part of it. He is a man we all need to meet and embrace.

Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, without equivocation, IS THE MAN FOR THE JOB, a true leader, a courageous personality, and a loyal Bar man per excellence!

Gentlemen of the Bar, I beckon on each and every one of us to give him our support, for a positive transformation of the affairs of the Nigerian Bar Association.

I hereby declare my undiluted support, to the man who will deliver, the man whose humility is at the peak, to the incoming president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to no other person than MR. CHUKWUKA NWABUEZE IKWUAZOM, SAN.
