Retired General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s newly sworn-in Minister of Defence, pledged on Friday, in a resolute address marking his assumption of office, to escalate coordinated military efforts to tackle the nation’s persistent security threats, emphasizing unity across the armed forces and beyond.

Speaking at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff before his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, outlined a strategy centered on “jointness and seamless coordination” to “overwhelm the enemy.” He announced an immediate rigorous review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations to bridge gaps between policy and on-ground execution.

“Our goal is to overwhelm the enemy through jointness and seamless coordination,” Musa declared, underscoring that Nigeria’s security demands “collective ownership and responsibility.” He highlighted the need for a holistic approach tackling both “kinetic” military actions and “non-kinetic” issues like governance, justice, equity, and fairness.

“The shedding of innocent blood must end. Our children deserve to return to school. Farmers must return to their farms. Many of these issues require a comprehensive, balanced approach,” he added, reaffirming his commitment to lead with “fairness, integrity, and accountability.”

A key pillar of Musa’s agenda is bolstering troop welfare, which he described as “strategic” rather than merely administrative. “Morale is a force multiplier. Our personnel must receive their kits on time. Their operational allowances must be paid promptly. Accommodation, medical care, and support for injured personnel and families of the fallen must be priorities,” he stressed. Musa emphasized that those “risking their lives for Nigeria deserve utmost respect,” vowing seamless support for troops and their families.

The minister’s return to the ministry drew warm endorsements from top officials. Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwa hailed it as a “homecoming,” praising Musa’s experience and character. “Your appointment by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a clear testament to the nation’s confidence in your experience, character, and capability to strengthen and reposition our security architecture,” Pheelangwa said. He affirmed the staff’s dedication to professionalism, integrity, discipline, and accountability under the new leadership.

Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede echoed the sentiment, pledging the full backing of the armed forces. “The Minister is not new to this ministry. We are glad to have him back, and we look forward to a more robust and coordinated approach to solving our security challenges,” Oluyede stated. He called for “sincerity, unity, and collective action” to restore public confidence in the military.

From the political front, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda issued a congratulatory message urging Musa to ramp up and sustain operations against bandits plaguing the northwest. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula, Radda described the appointment as “strategic and reassuring,” citing Musa’s track record as ideal for driving reforms.

“General Musa’s nomination and confirmation by the Senate come at a critical time when the nation needs experienced, strategic, and decisive leadership in the defence sector. His track record speaks volumes about his capacity to deliver results,” Radda said. He advocated for enhanced inter-agency coordination, increased pressure on bandits, and better welfare for frontline troops, while reaffirming Katsina’s support through initiatives like the Community Watch Corps.

“We are ready partners in this fight. Katsina State has created an enabling environment for security agencies, and we look forward to working closely with the Ministry of Defence under General Musa’s leadership,” the governor added.

Musa’s vows come amid ongoing insecurity in Nigeria, including banditry in the north, insurgency in the northeast, and separatist agitations in the southeast. Analysts view his emphasis on coordination and welfare as a potential game-changer, though challenges like funding and political will remain hurdles. As stakeholders unite behind him, expectations are high for tangible progress in restoring peace and enabling normalcy for millions of Nigerians.
