The Enugu North Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu State has remanded Levi Onyeka Obieze Obu, a native doctor popularly known as Ozo Ezeani or “E dey play E dey show,” over allegations of burying several people alive in a sewage pit, including a pregnant woman, reportedly for ritual purposes.
The shocking incident occurred on May 26 at Umumba Ndiagu community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, in Nigeria’s South-east.
Obu was arraigned alongside two others—Sebastine Offor and Ejike Odinwakpa—on seven counts including conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder. Prosecuting counsel Joshua Ejeh informed the court that the alleged offences occurred between April and May 26 and are punishable under the Criminal Code Laws of Enugu State.
During arraignment, the charges were read to the defendants in Igbo, and all confirmed understanding before pleading not guilty. Chief Magistrate O.S. Chukwuani subsequently ordered that the defendants be remanded in custody until August 20. The case file was directed to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and prosecution at a higher court, as the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction over capital offences and cannot grant bail.
Alex Amujiogu, lawyer to the second defendant, confirmed that they plan to apply for bail at the high court, where such applications can be considered.
Following the public revelation of Obu’s alleged crimes, he attempted to flee Nigeria but was arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service at the Badagry-Seme border in Lagos. He was handed over to the Lagos State Police Command and later transferred to Enugu for prosecution.
