*Says The Illegal Take Over Will Deepen Insecurity And Add To Bad Governance
*Appeals To Military To Release President Christian Kabore

The African Bar Association, AFBA, has described the military take over of government in Burkina Faso as unconstitutional.

The military had on Monday announced a take-over of government in Burkina Faso, suspending the Constitution and ousting the country’s democratically elected president hours after mutinous soldiers surrounded his home.

AFBA, in a statement dated 25th January, 2022 made available to TheNigeriaLawyer signed by its President, Hannibal Uwaifo, said the take over will not only deepen insecurity, it will also add to bad governance.

The statement reads in part, “The African Bar Association is saddened by the news of the unconstitutional and illegal forceful takeover of Government in Burkina Faso by the Armed Forces of that Country. This once again represents another ignoble development in the chequered history of Democracy in West Africa. While the Armed Forces may have genuine complaints, using an illegal method to achieve their individual and collective self desires will not only deepen the insecurity in the Country but will add to the bad Governance debacle the Citizens are already burdened with.”

The Association therefore called on the military to release President Christian Kabore. It expressed concern that it is becoming increasingly difficult to defend governments in Africa due to corruption and bad governance.

“The African Bar Association condemns in its entirety this pointless usurpation of Power and appeals to the Military to immediately release President Christian Kabore . and return to the Barracks. Unfortunately it is becoming increasingly difficult to defend most Governments in Africa due to their undemocratic tendencies, Corruption, bad Governance and Political debauchery which has plunged the West Africa region into a state of hopelessness resulting from youth unemployment, unimaginable levels of hunger, poverty and complete break down of security.

“Times without number, the African Bar Association has warned that the only path to security and economic progress is the rule of law and good governance. The harsh reality in the case of Burkina Faso is that the Government has been largely upright and working hard at the self inflicted problems inherited from shamed dictator and murderer Mr. Blaise Compore.

“Judging by the Military’s hunger for Power in the face of bad Governance, insecurity, docile and defenceless Citizens, no West African Country is spared of this re-surging menace orchestrated by evil forces outside the Continent. The worthless words of condemnations and ineffective sanctions often threatened by West African Leaders is self serving in the face of their refusal to use the Law and good governance as a Panacea to these unending Conflicts.
The organizers of the Coup d’etat in Burkina Faso must retrace their steps before they become dammed by history.” the statement further reads.
