Bulus Atsen, fsi, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to extend the Early Bird registration deadline for the Annual General Conference (AGC) in light of the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the event’s hosting rights.

The current deadline for Early Bird registration expires today, March 31, 2025. However, the political situation in Rivers State—originally chosen as the AGC venue—has thrown the planning process into disarray following the declaration of a State of Emergency, removal of democratic structures, and appointment of a Sole Administrator by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. Atsen argued that many members of the NBA had deliberately delayed their registration while waiting for clarity on whether the conference would still hold in Rivers State. Penalizing these members, he noted, would amount to an injustice, given that the delay was not of their making.

“It would be unconscionable to penalize members for acting out of principle. Many would have registered by now but chose to wait because they believed the NBA should make a decision on the venue before they committed financially. To now close the window without an extension is both unfair and impractical,” he said.

Mr. Atsen further emphasized that Nigeria’s economic situation has made it difficult for many lawyers—particularly young lawyers and those in the public sector—to afford the registration fees within the original timeframe.

“With inflation soaring above 33% and the naira’s continuous depreciation, many lawyers are already struggling financially. The NBA must show leadership by extending the deadline to accommodate those who are financially constrained and those who were waiting for clarity on the venue,” he added.

The NBA National Executive Council (NEC) had recently held an emergency meeting to deliberate on the possible relocation of the AGC. While a final decision has not yet been made, NEC empowered the NBA Executives to source an alternative venue.

Given this intervening period, Mr. Atsen holds that it is only fair and reasonable that the Early Bird registration window be extended.

The coming days will determine whether the NBA will heed this urgent call for fairness and economic justice.
