President Bola Tinubu has appointed the immediate past Director-General of the State Security Service, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Security Studies.

The appointment, which takes effect from Thursday, October 22, 2026, is for an initial term of four years.
The National Institute for Security Studies disclosed the appointment in a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Coordination and Liaison, Lilian Omo-Odigwe.
According to the statement, Bichi’s appointment was approved by President Tinubu following a recommendation by the current Director-General of the SSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.
“The Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the appointment of Y. M. Bichi, CFR, FWC, the immediate past Director-General of the Department of State Services, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Security Studies, Lower Usuma Dam, Abuja,” the statement said.
It added that “Bichi’s appointment was approved by President Tinubu based on the recommendation of the current DG-DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.”
The former SSS Director-General will succeed A.A. Gadzama as Chairman of the Institute’s Governing Board.
According to the statement, the appointment was made pursuant to Section 4 of the National Institute for Security Studies (Establishment) Act, 2019.
“His appointment is for an initial four-year term, effective 22nd October, 2026, in accordance with Section 4 of the National Institute for Security Studies (Establishment) Act, 2019.
“Bichi, who will succeed A.A. Gadzama, OFR, mni, on the Governing Board, handed over leadership of the DSS to the incumbent Director-General in August 2024,” the statement added.
Bichi began his career in the Security Division of the Kano State Cabinet Office before transferring his service in 1984.
He later rose through the intelligence service and eventually became Director-General before handing over to Ajayi in August 2024.
NISS said Bichi’s appointment brings extensive experience in intelligence, security administration, operational leadership and institutional training to the governance of the Institute.
