Asaba, the capital of Delta State, witnessed a vibrant commemoration over Friday and Saturday as Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, along with its nonprofit entity, Punuka Foundation, paid homage to the late Supreme Court Justice, Chukwunweike Idigbe.

Justice Idigbe, a native of Delta State and the founder of the law firm back in 1947, was celebrated through a series of events organized by Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, marking his significant contributions to the legal field and society.

The commemorative activities commenced with the inauguration of the “Hon. Justice Chike Idigbe e-Library & Resource Centre” on Friday. This state-of-the-art digital library was generously donated by the Punuka Foundation to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Asaba Branch. The resource center aims to support legal research and education, serving as a valuable asset for legal professionals and students alike.

In addition, a public lecture was held on the same day, organized by the NBA Asaba Branch, paying tribute to the legacy of the late Justice Idigbe. The day concluded with an engaging dinner event titled “An Evening with Prof Poonam Puri.” Notably, Prof Puri, a distinguished law professor from Toronto’s Osgoode Hall Law School, and Prof Emeka Chianu from the University of Benin, were featured speakers at the lecture.

The festivities continued on Saturday with the highlight being the inauguration of the “Hon. Justice Chukwunweike Idigbe Museum and Youth Centre.” This newly established center was constructed by Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors in honor of the late Justice Idigbe. Preceding the commissioning, a Holy Mass was conducted at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, followed by a visit to the Asagba of Asaba’s Palace.

These events are part of a year-long initiative designed to immortalize the contributions of Justice Idigbe. The Punuka Foundation Childcare Centre was inaugurated on July 31, while earlier in May, the Justice Chike Idigbe Faculty of Law at Veritas University’s permanent site in Abuja was unveiled. Both initiatives were carried out under the auspices of Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors, with the support of the Idigbe family.

The Principal Partner of Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), shared that the year-long events aim to honor his father’s legacy, who would have turned 100 years old on August 12, 2023. The newly established “Hon. Justice Chukwunweike Idigbe Museum and Youth Centre” is envisioned to preserve the late Justice Idigbe’s experiences, life lessons, and significant contributions to jurisprudence.

The Youth Centre, equipped with an internet-enabled library, offers a conducive environment for youth to engage in research and studies. It also provides space for seminars and programs to empower the youth, further aligning with the goal of nurturing knowledge and growth. Chief Idigbe expressed the intention to collaborate with the state government to ensure the successful implementation of these programs.

Additionally, the e-Library and Resource Centre were highlighted by Mrs. Elizabeth Idigbe, the Managing Partner at Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors. She emphasized that the e-Library will elevate legal practice, encouraging lawyers to pursue excellence. Mrs. Idigbe noted that the resource center addresses the need for enhanced legal knowledge among lawyers, contributing to more powerful and effective case presentations before the courts.

Notably, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Obarevwori, represented by Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the State Government, acknowledged the late Justice Idigbe’s contributions and praised the family for immortalizing his legacy. He recognized the importance of preserving Justice Idigbe’s works and judgments as a source of inspiration for the legal community and the youth.

The events were graced by prominent figures from the legal and business sectors, highlighting the profound impact of Justice Idigbe’s legacy on the legal field and society at large.
