The Adamawa State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has threatened to shut down courts in the state following the alleged attack on Dauda Hamman, the presiding judge of an Area Court in Mayo-Inne, Fufore Local Government Area.

JUSUN said Hamman was attacked and macheted inside his courtroom by armed men suspected to be connected with a case pending before him.
The union described the incident as a direct assault on the judiciary, judicial independence and Nigeria’s legal system.
In a statement signed by its Chairman and National Financial Secretary, Comrade Fxenty Sanda Jonathan, the union described the attack as “barbaric, inhuman, heinous and unacceptable.”
JUSUN said judicial officers must be allowed to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without intimidation, threats or physical violence from litigants and other interested persons.
“An arbiter of justice performing his constitutional duties as a judge should not be descended upon by armed men and macheted helplessly,” the union stated.
It condemned the incident as an attempt to intimidate judicial officers and interfere with the administration of justice.
The union demanded the immediate investigation of the attack and called on the Adamawa State Government, the police and other security agencies to identify and apprehend everyone connected with it.
It insisted that the perpetrators must be prosecuted to demonstrate that attacks on judicial officers would not be tolerated.
JUSUN warned that it could withdraw the services of its members and shut down court operations if the authorities failed to take adequate action over the incident.
The union also demanded increased security for magistrates, Area Court judges and other judicial workers serving in remote communities across Adamawa State.
According to JUSUN, judges assigned to rural courts face considerable risks because of the sensitive nature of the cases they handle and the absence of adequate security at many court premises.
“Judges in rural courts are exposed to high risks due to the nature of cases they handle and the absence of sufficient protection, a situation that must be addressed urgently,” the statement added.
The union appealed to judiciary workers across the state to remain calm while its leadership engaged the relevant authorities and security agencies over efforts to track down the attackers.
JUSUN did not disclose the nature or suit number of the case allegedly involving the assailants. It also did not state whether any suspect had been arrested.
As of the time of this report, the Adamawa State Police Command had not issued a detailed public statement identifying the attackers or confirming their arrest.
The Adamawa State Judiciary had also not publicly disclosed the extent of Hamman’s injuries or his current medical condition.
