Suspected hoodlums on Sunday attacked a Permanent Voter Card distribution centre at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, Okuku, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, where officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were distributing PVCs to residents.

The attackers reportedly fired sporadically into the air, disrupted the exercise and carted away some packs of PVCs from the venue.

A resident of Okuku, identified simply as Gbadebo, said the hoodlums entered the premises without immediately attracting attention before shooting into the air and moving towards where INEC officials had kept the PVCs.

According to him, residents who had gathered to collect their cards fled in different directions as the attackers made away with some packs of PVCs.

“The incident occurred at Oyinlola DC School, Ward 2, Okuku, Osun State, on Sunday. Some of us were around to collect our PVCs, and I can’t say when those hoodlums got into the premises,” he said.

“They shot into the air and disrupted the exercise. Some of us around fled in different directions, and they went straight to where those INEC staff put the PVCs and made away with some packs. The hoodlums involved are about eight in number.”

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Osun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said about 10 armed thugs attacked INEC officials who were peacefully distributing PVCs at the centre.

Ojelabi said the attackers fired sporadically and carted away three packs of Permanent Voter Cards.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved.

According to him, the command has deployed tactical and intelligence assets, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen PVCs.

“The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, has condemned the incident in its entirety and has directed a comprehensive investigation with a view to identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all those responsible,” Ojelabi said.

He added that the command remained committed to professionalism and strict adherence to the rule of law in carrying out its constitutional duties.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and avoid any action capable of causing further breach of peace.

Ojelabi also appealed to residents and eyewitnesses with credible information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its emergency lines.
