Olalekan Fadolapo, the Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not issue an order for the removal of the “all eyes on the judiciary” billboards that were displayed in various parts of the country.

ARCON had instructed the removal of these billboards, which were sponsored by a group known as Diasporas for Good Governance, on Tuesday. The council had also disbanded its advertising standards panel responsible for approving billboards related to the presidential election petition tribunal.

Phrank Shaibu, an aide to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, had criticized this action, viewing it as an infringement on freedom of speech.

In an interview with PUNCH on Saturday, Fadolapo stated that ARCON’s decision was not influenced by Tinubu, as some had speculated. He emphasized that the measures taken by the council, including the suspension of the director and deputy director of regulations, were standard administrative procedures.

Fadolapo clarified, “This advertisement has nothing to do with the presidency, I hope we all understand this. These adverts are primarily focused on the judiciary; they are in no way related to the presidency. I fail to comprehend why there are claims that the President or the presidency instructed us to take action against them. How could the presidency be involved in this matter?”

He further asserted that the presidency had not interfered at any point in the issue, as it was solely an administrative procedure. Fadolapo pointed out that errors had been identified, and before any action is taken, the officials in question would be given an opportunity for a fair hearing as part of the investigation.

Regarding the billboard owners, Fadolapo confirmed that necessary actions are being taken against them, and he indicated that outdoor organizations associated with these billboards would also face sanctions.
