Anthony Joshua, the former heavyweight world champion, delivered a knockout blow to late replacement Robert Helenius at London’s O2 Arena, furthering his aspirations for a showdown with Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia next January.

Joshua unleashed a powerful overhand right against the ropes in the seventh round, taking down the veteran Helenius who had stepped into the fight with just seven days’ notice. The forceful punch left the towering Finn in need of oxygen as Joshua celebrated his first knockout victory since 2020. Notably, UFC fighter Conor McGregor joined the supporters in celebrating Joshua’s victory.

During a post-fight interview with DAZN, Joshua expressed his desire for space and autonomy: “People need to leave me alone and let me do what I want. This is my time in the ring. People need to let me breathe. I’m going to carry this heavyweight division to the top.”

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, highlighted that Saudi Arabian representatives were present at the fight to discuss a potential match between Joshua and Wilder, the former long-serving WBC champion.

Despite the spectacular knockout, Joshua’s performance is viewed with some caution. A “three-fight plan” is being discussed for Joshua to face Helenius, Wilder, and the undefeated Tyson Fury, although it remains to be seen if Joshua is fully prepared to tackle the challenges ahead.

Hearn emphasized Joshua’s maturity as a heavyweight and his readiness for significant fights: “It’s the fight [Wilder] we want. He delivered a knockout of the year and we believe he can win that fight. He’s ready for marquee fights.”

The evening also featured other notable matchups, including Johnny Fisher’s victory for the British Southern Area title and Derek Chisora’s unanimous decision win over Gerald Washington.

The looming question remains whether Anthony Joshua will face Wilder in Saudi Arabia in what promises to be a captivating clash of heavyweight titans.
