The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has introduced a compulsory annual professional fee of N25,000 for students of its Faculty of Law.
In a memo signed by the Dean, Dr. Mrs Rose Ohiama Ugbe, the faculty management said the fee was approved by the university administration after discussions with the students’ body.
According to the memo marked UC/LAW/09 and dated February 21, 2024, the N25,000 charge is meant to cover costs related to accreditation by the Council of Legal Education as well as other professional expenses.
The memo addressed to all law students stated that payment of professional fees is a standard requirement for students in professional disciplines at UNICAL.
With the new policy taking effect in the 2023/2024 academic session. But the imposition of yet another fee could raise discontent among students who have often protested increments amid the current economic hardship.
