Amazon Web Services (AWS), a global cloud services leader with a presence in Nigeria, has announced that its customers in the country can now pay for its services in Naira.
The decision aims to help customers reduce foreign exchange costs and provide a localized payment experience, according to a statement from AWS.
The Nigerian Naira is among eight new currencies now accepted by AWS, alongside the Chilean Peso (CLP), Colombian Peso (COP), Uruguayan Peso (UYU), Egyptian Pound (EGP), Polish Zloty (PLN), Romanian Leu (RON), and Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH).
AWS explained the rationale for this development:
- Cost Reduction: Customers can avoid foreign exchange expenses tied to payments in foreign currencies.
- Regulatory Compliance: Local payments align with regulations limiting access to foreign currencies in some countries.
AWS’s embrace of local currency payments may be in response to growing competition from Nigerian cloud providers such as Nobus, Layer3, and Okra’s Nebula. These companies offer services priced in Naira, appealing to businesses seeking affordable alternatives amid fluctuating exchange rates.
In 2024, the declining value of the Naira made dollar-denominated services increasingly difficult for local companies. By enabling Naira payments, AWS alleviates this burden, particularly for Nigerian startups and banks heavily reliant on its cloud services.
AWS has actively invested in the Nigerian market to support its growing customer base.
- Lagos Office: Opened in November 2022 to cater to startups, enterprises, and public sector organizations.
- Local Zones Facility: Launched in January 2023 to enhance service performance by reducing latency for Nigerian businesses, which often rely on AWS’s European region.
With this move, AWS continues to strengthen its foothold in Nigeria’s cloud market while addressing local economic challenges.
