The Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) has commended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice T.I Muhammad, on the recommendation of virtual court proceeding made by the 10-man Committee constituted by him.

The President of the Association, Daniel Onwe Esq., Monday, who disclosed this in his statement made available to TheNigerialawyer(TNL), said the Association is happy with the introduction of virtual for court sitting.
According to him, ALDIN is well pleased with the introduction of virtual court proceedings being introduced in the High Court of different States in the country.
“This is a good response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In ALDIN’s view, the deployment of appropriate technology and introduction of virtual court proceedings will, to a large extent, solve the problem of inaccessibility which has been the bane of persons with disabilities in the Nigerian legal profession.
“The implication of this development, for instance, is that a lawyer in a wheelchair can attend court sessions, without being subjected to the indignity of crawling or being carried into the courtroom, if located upstairs.
“Generally, it is the considered opinion of ALDIN that appropriate technology will expedite the justice administration in Nigeria and save judicial officers, lawyers, litigants and witnesses time, stress and money, as well as help in checking corruption in the judiciary.
The group also called on the government to take necessary steps to see that this innovation by the CJN is not foiled
“In the circumstance, ALDIN calls on the government to take adequate steps to improve on power and digital infrastructure, which are critical to the success of a digitized legal system.
“Calls on all judicial officers and lawyers to acquire the requisite skill set to efficiently function in the emergent legal regime.
“Strongly advised that this innovative introduction of technology into our court proceedings should not be limited to the COVID-19 period, but should become the new and permanent normal in the Nigerian judicial system,” he said.
The ALDI also demands immediate steps be taken towards effecting the requisite amendments to the corpus of our law and rules, to accommodate and institutionalize this recommended new lease of life.
