Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Dele Alake has countered claims by lawyer Niyi Akintola on the causes of the recent fatal explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a press statement, Alake’s office said the Minister is awaiting the results of forensic investigations into the blast before making any definite pronouncements. His office also revealed that mines inspectors have been deployed to support probes by security agencies.

This counters earlier statements by lawyer Akintola, who blamed the explosion on illegal mining activities. Akintola called for the arrest and prosecution of an unnamed holder of a mining license in the area.

Alake stressed that no mining licenses have been issued by the current administration for Oyo State. His office said President tinubu has set up an inter-ministerial committee, which met last week, to address insecurity around Nigeria’s natural resources.

The committee will be engaging heads of security agencies as it works on recommendations for effectively securing solid minerals, forests and marine resources.

Alake believes security agencies should complete forensic probes to properly inform people and hold culprits accountable, instead of relying on speculations. His office said the government remains committed to addressing challenges around the Ibadan explosion completely.
