The Edo State chapter of Labour Party has refuted reports that it warned a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata, to stay off the 2024 governorship race.

In a statement on Thursday, the party dismissed the alleged warning as the handwork of an expelled member, Mr Abayomi Arabambi, saying he lacks the authority to determine aspirants for the governorship election.

The Publicity Secretary, Comrade Sam Uroupa said Arabambi is not a member of Labour Party neither is he from Edo State, hence he cannot decide who should run in the polls.

He also denied claims that Akpata was serving as an operative of the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, citing a past statement where the former NBA President debunked being sponsored by any politician.

Comrade Uroupa reiterated that the Edo Labour Party leadership did not at anytime warn Akpata or any other aspirant from joining the governorship contest.

He advised the senior lawyer, his supporters and members of the public to disregard publications by Arabambi and his group, affirming that Akpata remains one of the top governorship contenders on the party’s platform.
