In a recent appearance on TVC, Allen Onyeoma, the CEO of Air Peace, made a controversial statement comparing the economic situations in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Onyema claimed that individuals earning a monthly salary of two hundred thousand Naira (₦200,000) in Nigeria are better off than those earning two thousand pounds (£2,000) in the UK.

During the interview, Onyema discussed the current economic crisis and the strength of the Nigerian Naira. He agreed with the host that a significant portion of the issue is “artificial” and went on to make a comparison between the two countries.

“Go to London, if you earn two thousand pounds a month in London, you’re a pauper. What two thousand pounds can afford you is like two thousand Naira,” Onyema stated. He further emphasized his point by saying, “The person earning two hundred thousand Naira in Nigeria is better.”

Onyema supported his claim by highlighting that with a monthly income of ₦200,000, a Nigerian can afford to employ a maid, a driver, and other domestic staff, which he believes is a testament to the Naira’s value when compared to other foreign currencies.

The Air Peace CEO also urged Nigerians to stop demonetising the country, suggesting that the Naira has more value than is currently being projected in the international market.

Onyema’s statements have sparked discussions on social media platforms, with some Nigerians agreeing with his perspective while others have criticized his comparison as being oversimplified and not taking into account various factors such as the cost of living, inflation rates, and purchasing power in both countries.
