The West African Examinations Council has released the results of candidates who sat the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, with more than 1.2 million candidates obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

The Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, announced the results on Wednesday at the council’s national office in Yaba, Lagos.

Dangut disclosed that 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54 per cent of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat the examination, obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

The result represents a decline of 1.42 percentage points compared with the performance recorded in the 2025 examination.

According to WAEC, 558,883 male candidates, representing 28.65 per cent, and 641,631 female candidates, representing 32.89 per cent, obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

The figures showed that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in meeting the benchmark commonly required for admission into tertiary institutions.

The council further disclosed that 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent of those who sat the examination, obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, irrespective of whether English Language or Mathematics was included.

WAEC said a total of 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 secondary schools registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 eventually sat for it.

The candidates comprised 953,459 males, representing 48.88 per cent, and 997,267 females, representing 51.12 per cent.

The examination body said the results of 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent of those who sat the examination, had been fully processed and released.

However, the results of 116,031 candidates, representing 5.95 per cent, were still being processed due to issues being resolved by the council.

WAEC assured the affected candidates that their outstanding results would be released within a few days after the issues were resolved.

The council also announced that the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of those who sat the examination, had been withheld over alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

According to WAEC, the percentage of withheld results represents a decline of 1.11 percentage points from the 9.70 per cent recorded during the 2025 examination.

Dangut attributed the reduction in alleged examination malpractice to measures introduced by the council to strengthen the credibility and integrity of the examination process.

He identified the continued deployment of computer-based examinations, paper serialisation and the Digital Examiner Mark System as some of the measures adopted to curb malpractice and improve the accuracy of result processing.

WAEC advised candidates to check their results through the council’s official result-checking platform and urged those whose results were still being processed to remain patient.
