Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has once again failed to appear before the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight, prompting concerns about transparency in the state’s governance.

The committee, chaired by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, had invited Ibas to a rescheduled interactive session on Thursday, April 24, 2025, to discuss developments in Rivers State since his appointment.

The invitation followed Ibas’ absence from an earlier meeting scheduled for April 17, 2025, which was postponed after he requested a rescheduling. Despite expectations of his attendance, Ibas was reportedly present at the National Economic Council meeting at the Presidential Villa on April 24 but did not appear before the House committee. The committee, constituted by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on April 15, 2025, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, aims to ensure legislative oversight in line with Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Committee members, visibly disappointed, exited the House of Representatives Complex after the latest no-show. When approached by journalists, Chairman Ihonvbere declined to comment, stating, “No comment.” Reports indicate that the interactive session with Ibas has been postponed indefinitely, raising questions about the committee’s ability to fulfill its mandate.

The Ad-Hoc Committee was established to ascertain the state of affairs in Rivers State amid the ongoing political crisis, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly. Ibas’ repeated absence has sparked criticism, with observers noting the need for accountability in the administration of the state under emergency rule.
