Images showing the inappropriate footwear in court circulated rapidly through local media.

In one viral photo, a lawyer can be seen addressing a judge while wearing black flip-flops, in clear violation of legal dress codes. This sparked criticism from senior legal professionals in Ghana, who referred to it as “disgraceful,” “an insult to the dignity of the court,” and a failure to uphold dress decorum.

However, some young lawyers argued that Africa should adopt dress styles suited to local climate and culture rather than Western standards. They say judges should prioritize legal arguments over dictating clothing.

The incident has reignited debates over long-held expectations that lawyers outfit themselves expensively while working long courtroom hours. Some argue these old-fashioned dress rules are outdated, cost-prohibitive and unrelated to actual legal skills and qualifications.

The controversy underscores tensions between strictly upholding legal customs versus modernizing courts to focus purely on justice and due process.
