Senator Elisha Abbo of Adamawa State has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of engineering his removal from the Senate by the Court of Appeal on Monday.

Hours after the appellate court nullified his election victory, Senator Abbo alleged at a press briefing in Abuja that Akpabio spearheaded a plot to oust him and other Senators, including Orji Uzor Kalu, for not supporting his Senate presidency bid.

Abbo described his sack as a “coup on democracy” even though the court ruled in favor of Peoples Democratic Party’s Amos Yohanna, declaring him winner of the February senatorial election.

The embattled lawmaker insisted he won the polls by over 11,000 votes, despite the Appeal Court verdict awarding victory to Yohanna. Abbo called on his supporters to remain calm regardless of the judgement.

The three-member appellate court panel was unanimous in vacating the tribunal decision that had earlier affirmed Abbo of the APC as the valid winner of the Adamawa North Senatorial district.

Senator Abbo first gained notoriety in 2019 after assaulting a woman at an Abuja sex toy shop. A court fined him N50 million in damages for the assault, which was caught on CCTV.

By alleging Akpabio targeted him and other Senators over the Senate presidency tussle, Abbo has amplified tensions within the ruling APC. His unproven claims may worsen divisions as the party grapples with the fallout of the contentious National Assembly leadership elections.

For now, his political future remains uncertain following his court-ordered removal from the upper legislative chamber. But Abbo appears determined to fight on by accusing the Senate President of orchestrating his downfall through the judiciary.
