Obaseki explained that the inmates had spent a considerable time in the prison facilities, with some of them spending no less than two years without trial. The governor, who announced this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, stated that the decision was part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary. He described it as a step towards improving the justice delivery system in the state, even as he added that the beneficiaries would be sternly cautioned to stay away from crime before they regained their freedom. According to him, the move was also geared towards “reducing the number of awaiting-trial inmates by 50 per cent, which is part of Federal Government’s policy on decongesting prisons. Speaking earlier at a church service held at the Christ Embassy zonal headquarters in Benin, Obaseki urged Nigerians to be grateful for the opportunity to coexist peacefully in a free nation for 57 years.
