The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced the identification of two suspected cases of Ebola virus disease in the North-East region of the country, with the affected individuals placed in isolation as laboratory investigations and contact tracing commence.

The agency disclosed this in an update issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, explaining that public health officials had commenced the identification and listing of persons who might have come into contact with the suspected cases.

According to the NCDC, laboratory testing is ongoing to determine whether the two individuals are infected with the Ebola virus.

The agency emphasised that the classification of the cases as suspected does not mean that the individuals have tested positive for the disease.

“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the NCDC stated.

The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, maintain good hand hygiene, practise improved sanitation and comply with public health guidance to minimise the risk of infection.

It also assured the public that further updates would be provided as soon as verified information became available.

The development comes amid heightened surveillance following Nigeria’s confirmation of its first Ebola case in more than a decade on October 20, 2026.

The confirmed case involved a 42-year-old Swiss woman who tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in Abuja after travelling to Nigeria from Uganda.

Following confirmation of the infection, the patient was placed in isolation and received treatment from Nigerian healthcare workers.

She was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland on Monday aboard a medical aircraft for further treatment.

Her husband, who had been identified as a close contact, was also evacuated to Switzerland.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed that the patient had shown considerable clinical improvement before her evacuation.

According to the minister, she was stable, conscious and communicating, while her laboratory test results were approaching baseline levels.

The identification of the two suspected cases in the North-East has prompted further public health investigations, although the NCDC has not confirmed any additional Ebola infections arising from the latest development.

The agency maintained that laboratory confirmation remains necessary before either suspected case can be classified as a confirmed Ebola infection.
