Two judges of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Hon. Justice Olufunke Anuwe and Hon. Justice Olukayode Arowosegbe, are set to lead discussions on judicial interpretation, employer liability, employees’ entitlements and enforcement of compensation awards at the 2026 Legal Stakeholders’ Engagement scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The two-day programme, organised by the National Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), will take place on Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30, 2026.

The engagement will bring together judicial officers and other legal stakeholders to examine critical issues surrounding the interpretation, application and enforcement of the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010, particularly in relation to workplace injuries, employer responsibilities, evidentiary requirements and the enforcement of judicial decisions.

Justice Olufunke Anuwe will lead the first presentation, titled “Judicial Interpretation of Injury, Employer Liability and Employee Entitlements under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010: Doctrinal Boundaries, Scope and Emerging Trends.”

Her presentation will examine the judicial interpretation of injuries arising out of and in the course of employment, including the legal principles governing causation, the scope of employment, employer liability and employees’ entitlements under the Act.

Justice Anuwe will also address the interpretation and application of key provisions of the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010, while exploring emerging judicial trends and their implications for employers, employees and the administration of workplace compensation claims.

The discussions are expected to provide further insight into the legal boundaries of compensable workplace injuries and the circumstances under which employers may incur liability under the statutory compensation framework.

Justice Olukayode Arowosegbe will deliver the second paper, titled “Standards of Proof, Enforcement of Judgments and Awards under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010: Evidentiary Challenges, Compliance and Judicial Strategies.”

His presentation will focus on the burden and standards of proof applicable to employees’ compensation claims, particularly the admissibility, evaluation and evidentiary weight of medical reports and other documentary evidence presented before the courts.

Justice Arowosegbe will also examine challenges associated with enforcing judgments and compensation awards, including compliance gaps, delays in post-judgment proceedings and procedural difficulties that may affect the timely satisfaction of employees’ compensation claims.

The paper will further consider judicial strategies for strengthening enforcement mechanisms, improving compliance with court decisions and enhancing the efficiency of the employees’ compensation system.

The engagement is expected to provide a platform for judicial officers and other legal stakeholders to exchange knowledge, examine practical challenges and deepen their understanding of the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010.

It will also encourage discussions on improving the adjudication of workplace injury claims, strengthening the enforcement of compensation awards and promoting a more effective legal framework for protecting employees’ rights.

The programme will be held at Johnwood Hotel by Bolton, 6 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, with proceedings scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m.
