Elder statesman and National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, has died at the age of 100.

His death was announced on Tuesday by the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in a statement personally signed by him in Akure.

Aiyedatiwa described Fasoranti as a revered elder statesman whose century-long life was marked by wisdom, integrity and selfless service to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

“With a heavy heart but with total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing of our revered elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who departed this world at the glorious age of 100,” the governor said.

He described the late Afenifere leader as a patriarch and a voice of principle who devoted much of his life to public service, justice, good governance and the advancement of his people.

“Pa Fasoranti was a patriarch, a beacon of wisdom, integrity and selfless service whose century-long life was marked by uncommon commitment to the development of our dear State, Yorubaland and Nigeria at large,” Aiyedatiwa said.

The governor said Fasoranti’s counsel and fatherly guidance would be greatly missed, particularly his consistent positions on issues affecting governance and society.

“His counsel, fatherly guidance and principled stand on issues of justice and good governance will be sorely missed.

“He lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints of honour and legacy for generations to come,” he added.

Fasoranti was one of the most prominent elder statesmen in the South-West and for years occupied a central position in Afenifere, a socio-political organisation associated with the promotion of Yoruba interests and advocacy on national issues.

His death marks the passing of one of the organisation’s longest-serving and most recognisable leaders, whose interventions on political and governance matters remained influential within Yorubaland and beyond.

Aiyedatiwa said the loss was not only to Fasoranti’s immediate family but also to Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

On behalf of the Ondo State Government and people of the state, the governor extended condolences to the Fasoranti family and all those mourning the elder statesman.

He prayed that God would grant the family the strength to bear the loss and give the deceased eternal rest.

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” Aiyedatiwa said.
