The Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State has rejected a media report alleging that the Register of Voters was not displayed at some Registration Area centres in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas, insisting that the exercise took place across all 245 wards in the state.

The Commission made the clarification on Thursday in a statement issued by its Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Esther Emeh, in reaction to a report aired by ARISE News during its What’s Trending programme.

According to INEC, the claim that the register was unavailable at some centres in the two local government areas was inaccurate and did not reflect what occurred during the exercise.

“The news alleging that the display of the Register of Voters did not take place at some Registration Area centres in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas is false,” Emeh said.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the display of the Register of Voters was conducted across all 245 Registration Areas (Wards) in Lagos State, including all Registration Areas in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas.”

INEC consequently urged residents to disregard what it described as misleading information and to rely on the Commission’s official communication channels for accurate information concerning the electoral process.

The Commission also called on media organisations and journalists to verify election-related information with credible and authoritative sources before publication or broadcast.

“Responsible journalism and accurate reporting are essential to preventing the spread of misinformation and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process,” the Commission said.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, credible electoral processes and the timely dissemination of information as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.

The display of the voters’ register is intended to enable registered voters to verify their details and raise claims or objections where necessary as part of preparations for the polls.

However, ARISE News subsequently said it stood by its report, maintaining that its account concerning access to the voters’ register in Lagos was based on independent verification. The development therefore leaves INEC and the broadcaster presenting conflicting accounts of what occurred at the affected centres.
